QuickWorks 8.2 December 15, 1999
=====================================================================
QuickWorks Release Notes - Revision 8.2
=====================================================================
* QuickWorks now has A La Carte licensing. This means that
designers can license individual tools in QuickWorks - without
purchasing the entire package. The licensing is now done thru
Flexlm 7.0. PLEASE SEE THE INFORMATION BELOW FOR INSTRUCTIONS
REGARDING USE OF NEW AND EXISTING HARDWARE KEYS.
* All QuickPCI devices are supported in all design flows. This
includes the QL5030, QL5130, QL5032, QL5232 and QL5064.
* The new 484-pin Fineline BGA package for the QL5064 is now
supported.
* The QL5232 QuickPCI ESP device is now offered in a 208 CQFP
package (select the CF208 package in the software).
* The 32-bit QuickPCI device reference designs have been improved
to make the designs easier modify and simulate.
* All 32-bit QuickPCI devices now have VHDL reference designs.
You can find these under the
\pasic\designs\reference\(device name)\vhdl directory.
Verilog test benches are provided for mixed VHDL/Verilog simulators.
VHDL test benches are being developed now, and will be available
in an upcoming release.
* The timing numbers have been updated for pASIC 3, QuickRAM and
QuickPCI devices. Designers should see roughly five to six
percent improvements over the timing in QuickWorks 8.1.
* EDIF reader enhancements to support embedded RAM blocks in both
QuickRAM and QuickPCI devices, and the embedded PCI controller
in QuickPCI devices.
* The Quickboolean to Verilog coversion utility is included in this
release. All QuickBoolean/schematic designs are supported.
* Programming of devices is now done with a stand-alone software
package, called QuickPRO. This can be found on the QuickWorks
CD-ROM, and must be installed in order to program devices.
=====================================================================
QuickWorks Known Problems/Issues - Revision 8.2
=====================================================================
* If you are using a QuickRAM device, then the post-layout
simulation files can only be written for Verilog and VHDL
simulators. Other EDIF-based and proprietary netlist
simulators will be supported in the next release.
The Silos and Veribest Simulator in QuickWorks is fully
supported.
* RAM initialization support (ROM functionality) through serial
PROM loading has not been verified with the QL5064 at the time
of this software release. Please contact the QuickLogic
Hotline for information regarding ROM support for the QL5064.
* RAM initialization support has been turned off by default for
all QuickRAM and QuickPCI devices. If you previously were using
RAM initialization functionality, you can turn this option back
on through the Tools -> Options -> Device Programming menu in
SpDE. It was turned off by default because RAM initialization
has been found to cause some RESET problems with some PCI
motherboards.
* There is a problem with SpDE generating the .hex file for
serial PROM loading. This will be fixed in a later release of
SpDE.
* The Hierarchy Navigator has a bug regarding reloading of
schematics that have been resaved while the Hierarchy Navigator
is still open with the same design. If the directory path has a
"." in it (for example: c:\my.design\top.sch), the Hierarchy
Navigator will not reload the new schematic. The workaround is
to execute File -> Restart from the Hierarchy Navigator. This
will force the Hierarchy Navigator to reload the updated
schematic.
* Currently, the Hierarchy Navigator will issue a warning when a
design contains an I/O marker for a bus wider than 32 bits. The
warning indicates that the Waveform Editor does not support
busses greater than 32 bits in width. This message is incorrect,
and the Waveform Editor supports busses up to 64 bits in width.
* The QL5064 device has a dedicated clock pin (pin R26) that
drives the user_clock input on the PCI interface inside the
FPGA. There is a bug in the I/O Placement Editor that allows
you to place other global clocks on pin R26. When you save the
placement in the Editor and try to place and route the design
with the new placement, you will get an error about this illegal
condition. You cannot fix any other clock pin to pin R26, unless
that clock signal drives the user_clock input of the QL5064.
* The report file (.rpt) generated by SpDE contains pinout
information relevent to each design. The QL5064 has six pins
(outputs) that are used for scan testing of the PCI controller
of the QL5064. Since these pins are outputs, they should be
left floating on the board. A note at the bottom of the pinout
section of the report file indicates which pins should be left
floating.
* The Highlight Net capability in SpDE does not work correctly for
the QL5064. This will be addressed in the next release of
software. This problem only affects the QL5064.
* Simulation clock frequencies greater than 120 Mhz (approx.)
may result in no change on flip-flop outputs. This bug can
be worked-around with a setting in the \pasic\spde\data\spde.ini
file. Change this line (in the [fragment netlister] section):
;TransportDelayMode=FALSE
to:
TransportDelayMode=TRUE
(make sure to remove the initial semi-colon)
* QuickLogic does not offer a "-X" speed grade for use in
3.3V systems (5V is OK). Please do not use this option in
SpDE's Tools-Options window under Delay Modeler.
* If you get a "No Network Found" Error or if a WINSOCK.DLL is
run when you start SpDE, insert the following line in your
autoexec.bat file:
SET LM_NO_NETWORK=TRUE
* Windows NT Hardware Key Drivers must be manually installed. See
the readme: "Windows NT License Drivers Installation"
* If you are using Windows NT 4.0, but do not have Service Pack 2
(or higher), then a Microsoft patch called a HOTFIX must be
installed in order to complete the installation of security key
drivers for Windows NT 4.0. See the readme: "Windows NT License
Drivers Installation."

The QuickWorks toolkit contains a licensing mechanism. This was a
necessary action in order to fulfill contract obligations with OEM
tool vendors for the different design tools within QuickWorks.
QuickLogic is the first to provide ala-carte licensing. QuickWorks®
8.2 will allow designers to pick and choose the software components
that they require. This new licensing scheme will require that all
current customers receive a new license. Because we value your
business, your yearly maintenance fee will not change. You will
continue to receive all the features of QuickWorks as you currently
have. Below is a description of the new licensing.
QuickWorks is the comprehensive QuickLogic pASIC and ESP design
environment with the following features:
Free Tools
1. Schematic Capture
2. Place and Route
3. Static Timing Analysis
4. RAM/ROM/FIFO Wizard
Subscription based OEM Tools
5. Synplify-Lite Synthesis from Synplicity
6. Verilog Simulator from Simucad
7. VHDL Simulator from VeriBest
8. HDL Editor from TurborWriter
9. HDL Tutorials from Doulos
Items 1-4 are free licensed tools for all users.
Items 5-9 are yearly subscription based licensed tools
When installing QuickWorks, the user is allowed to install all of
the above tools and is granted a 3 day temporary license.
A request for a license for any or all tools is then sent to
reg@quicklogic.com.
A 30-day evaluation license file is then emailed back to user,
usually within 24 hours.
The user then has 30 days to evaluate all the tools. At the end
of the evaluation period, the user has the option of paying the
subscription fee for the OEM tools or letting the licenses expire.
The free tools (items 1-4) will continue to work regardless of any
licensing fees paid or not.
Thirty days prior to license expiring, the software will remind the
user that the license is about to expire. If the user does not wish
to pay the following year's licensing fee, then a new license will
be issued to the user. This new license allows the customer to
continue using the current version of the licensed product, but does
not allow them to upgrade to the next revision of the software until
the subscription is renewed.
1. When first installed, QuickWorks will operate for 4 days in
evaluation mode. This time is allowed for you to send QuickLogic
a registration form with a request for an authorization code.
2. The HELP menu in SpDE has a License command which opens a window
that is used to register QuickWorks.
3. The license window contains a System ID field. This is the most
important field which needs to be completed to enable the
QuickWorks toolkit. Read the next two items carefully.
4. If you have purchased a full toolkit, the System ID will be
detected automatically by reading the code off the QuickLogic
hardware key attached to the computer's parallel port. If you
forget to attach the hardware key to the parallel port initially,
you will need to re-open the license window so the key is
detected. If you are using Windows NT, please make sure you have
installed the Sentinel parallel port driver, or the software will
not be able to read the hardware key. Refer to the section below
titled "License Drivers for Windows NT". If you have purchased
the full QuickWorks product on-line, the Hardware key will be
sent to you in the mail. You may request a 30-day evaluation
license while you are waiting for the Hardware key according to
the next step.
5. If you have received a 30-day evaluation toolkit, then you must
enter the 6-digit EVAL System ID printed on the back of the
QuickWorks CD-ROM case that came with your 30-day evaluation tools.
If you downloaded the EVAL toolkit, the page that is displayed just
before you downloaded the EVAL toolkit shows the System ID you
need to use. If you did not write the System ID down at that time,
then simply go through the QuickWorks EVAL download process again
until it gives you a System ID (this will be before the actual
download step).
6. From the license window, you should complete all contact
information, especially NAME, ADDRESS, FAX, PHONE, and COUNTRY
(if not in the USA). Note: It is especially important that you
verify that your FAX number is correct. This is the fax number
QuickLogic will use to return your Authorization code. Also, this
information is used to send you software upgrades and other
notices. If this information is incorrect, you may not receive
software upgrades or other critical information from QuickLogic.
7. From the license window, choose from the two options: to print
your registration form directly to a printer, or to create a text
file which can be emailed to QuickLogic. If the printing option
doesn't work, then select "Write Registration Form to File"
instead, and then print from Notepad when it opens.
8. Click on the Create Form button in the License Window. This will
create the complete form with all of your contact information and
System ID. When you fax or email this form to QuickLogic,
QuickLogic will send a fax back to you (using the number you
entered in the FAX field) within 24 hours. This return fax will
contain the Authorization Code, which will enable QuickWorks to
operate beyond the initial 4-day temporary license period.
Fax the Registration Form to: 408-990-4110
- or -
eMail the Registration Form to: reg@quicklogic.com
Note: Do not contact the QuickLogic Technical Support team with
license requests. License requests can only be filled by faxing
to the number above or emailing to the email address above.
