It can work with the power provided by the USB port. With the latest software version it should be able to handle 17083 different devices.

If you try to use the Xgpro software (you can download it freely) and you use it in demo mode you can select any component you want. On the tab "Device.Info" you can see how to put the selected component on the ZIF socket. If the chosed component requires an adapter that is shown with its wiring schematics. Everything (HW+SW) seems to me very well done.
